Driving through wine country is like floating into a postcard. Around every corner there is something inspiring. The wine farms roll over gentle sloping hills with dramatic backdrops of purple hazed mountains often capped with white blankets of clouds. The vineyards are well kept with neatly trimmed rows of vines growing some of the finest quality wine grapes in the world. Our conditions are ideal with a rainy season and slow ripening season into spring and early summer.
First we visited Durbanville Hills, with its award winning wines. Beautiful presented gardens and friendly staff upon entering their establishment. There were a lot of visitors partly because it was Christmas season, but I have a feeling it’s more because of how well known Durbanville Hills are. We spend an hour sipping on Cabernet Sauvignon followed by a hearty breakfast.
We decided to visit one of South Africa’s top wine producers, none other than Kanonkop! Anyone who knows a little about wine will agree they make some of the best wine in the world. They are fairly well priced for their quality. We delighted in tasting their Pinotage range. I was tempted to buy a box of their best. There is something about their wine that no other cultivar has.
You will find that the locals here are incredibly helpful with directions or advice. Take a chance and introduce yourself to strangers while visiting these wonderful establishment. For the most part the people visiting are friendly, fun people who love a good laugh and often will end up inviting you to visit another winery with them, adding to the day’s adventure!
If you are going to do the wine route I strongly advise that you find a designated driver who will be enjoying a cool drink or mineral water instead. The wines are so good that those who partake eventually start seeing double by the end of the day.
Once the day is done relax at one of FZP’s luxury cape town apartments and enjoy the evening sipping of some of the most enjoyable wines money can buy, or opt for a night out on the town to celebrate a fabulous day out in the vineyards.
